Designer Narrative:
Through my design practice, I am interested in creating outcomes which provide encounters between both human and non-human entities. I believe that fostering relationships we have with materials, objects and other lifeforms, as well as other people, can enhance the well-being of both humans and the environment.
I have experience working with various materials and techniques, but most experience lies in ceramics and biobased materials. However, my practice does not stand on materials, but instead on the theme of promoting coexistence rather than dominance in a more-than-human world. For that, I enjoy taking novel approaches, materials and techniques to reach the aim.
I emphasise experienced experiences over the outcome, which can also be seen in my interest in craft practice. Through the process of creating with our own hands and body, we develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of the materials and objects we work with –simultaneously connecting us to the world we live in. This creates a tangible connection between us and the non-human world that can be difficult to achieve through more technologically advanced methods. This connection with the physical world allows us to feel grounded and present.
I believe these approaches strengthen our connection to the world around us. By embracing craftsmanship as a medium to encounter the world more bodily and by raising awareness of other ways of being, people could hopefully cultivate a deeper, more empathic approach to the non-human world and that way have more meaningful experiences with it.
