The NoUse project aims to transform ceramic waste into environmentally sustainable and aesthetically pleasing objects. The project’s name has two meanings. The first meaning is “no use”, referring to the materials’ original state, which is considered as waste. The second meaning is “nouse”, which means “to arise” in Finnish, highlighting the project’s goal of giving discarded materials a new purpose.
The crushed ceramic pieces are attached together by using glazing, and that way work as a base for the slipcasted clay object. During the project, different experiments were made with different shaped firing molds, as well as different combinations of crush and slip casted objects. The final product was then cut with a water jet cutter to create different shapes.
The aim was to create objects that have a contrast between smooth and rough textures while maintaining harmony. The project culminates in a collection of objects that showcase the potential of upcycling ceramic waste and reducing waste in the ceramics industry.
