Ööttings is a series of peculiar, hand-built ceramic objects whose purpose remains open-ended. They appear as if they might have a function, yet upon closer inspection, they invite imagination and playful interpretation. I personally tried to think of some possible uses for all of the objects, including spoons (obvious ones), irrigation systems for house plants, candle holders or homes for pollinators. In all cases, I see these objects as something that pauses the rush and connects their users to the surrounding world we live in.
The pieces were created intuitively, without prior planning, in a dialogue between hands and material. The series highlights the importance of embodied making and the unpredictability of the process. Ööttings works were made from low-fired clay left over from the Olla-station projects (2022 and 2025), emerging alongside their construction as a way to unwind.
The name playfully derives from Earth-things, but also echoes the Finnish expression “öö” – a sound akin to “hmm” in English, capturing a moment of hesitation, wonder, or curiosity that these objects may evoke.
